NEW ANALYTICAL SERVICES AND UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS

The SIF is pleased to now offer the following analytical services:

 

δ13C AND δ2H OF METHANE FROM ECOLOGICAL SAMPLES, INCLUDING DISSOLVED METHANE FROM GROUNDWATER.  Minimum sample requirements are 0.8 nmoles of CH4 for δ13C analysis and 2 nmoles for δ2H analysis. Details of the analysis will be presented in June at the 18th ASITA meeting (Advances in Stable Isotope Techniques and Applications) in Fairbanks, Alaska (Simplified Modification of a Pre-Concentration Device for the Measurement of δ13C and δ2H of Atmospheric Methane; Yarnes C).

 

COMPOUND-SPECIFIC STABLE ISOTOPE ANALYSIS OF δ13C AND δ15N OF AMINO ACIDS. Sample requirements are 5-10mg for animal tissues, 50mg for most plant tissues. The SIF is presently accepting only plant and animal tissues for CSIA of amino acids; we expect to open the service up to other matrices (soils, etc.) in the very near future. Details and application of the method will be presented this August at the 8th ISOECOL meeting (International Conference on Applications of Stable Isotope Techniques to Ecological Studies) in Brest, France (Rapid Compound-Specific Stable Isotope Analysis of Amino Acids by GC-C-IRMS of Methyl Chloroformate Derivatives; He R, Walsh R, Yarnes CT).

 

NEW INSTRUMENTATION FOR δ18O ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC SOLIDS. With the addition of an elementar PyroCube (Elementar Analysensysteme GmbH, Hanau, Germany), improved δ18O values are achieved primarily through better separation of N2 from the measured CO peak. We are achieving better than 0.3‰ precision for high nitrogen content solids. We continue to validate methods for oxygen in inorganic matrices (such as bone apatite), but do not accept these samples at this time. Please email with specific interests.

 

NEW INSTRUMENTATION FOR δ13C OF DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON (DOC). To improve chromatography and lower LOQ, a G-100 Gas Interface (Graden Instruments, Oakville, Canada) was added to the DOC system. At 0.5ppm, δ13C precision is better than 0.4‰. Validation continues on the method for 13C of saline (seawater) samples.

 

DISSOLVED GAS RATIOS MEASURED FROM WATER SAMPLES USING A MEMBRANE-INLET MASS SPECTROMETER (MIMS).  The SIF now provides the analysis of dissolved gas ratios (e.g. N2/O2/Ar) by membrane-inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) from water samples > 7mL.  While still under evaluation, 15N:Ar services at the SIF are expected in the coming months.

 

 

THE SIF WELCOMES DR. RICK DOUCETT TO THE TEAM
Dr. Rick Doucett will be overseeing trace gas analysis (e.g., DIC, CO2, CH4, nitrate, N2 & N2O).  Prior to arriving at the SIF, Rick managed the stable isotope laboratory at Northern Arizona University for over 10 years.  Rick received his PhD in Biology from the University of Waterloo in Canada where he used C, N, S (and more recently, H) isotopes to investigate freshwater food-webs. He enjoys trail running, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, and drinking wine.

 

 

FISCAL YEAR END IS QUICKLY APPROACHING
Fiscal year end for many institutions is quickly approaching. If you require an invoice before your fiscal year end or administrative close, please contact Emily ASAP. Please provide at least two weeks notice for invoices ahead of your fiscal deadline to allow for any administrative delays and paperwork processing on both ends. Emily will be out of the office from August 21 through September 6, 2012, so if you require an invoice around this time, please submit your request early.

 

 

AVOID SHIPPING AND BANK FEES
If you have incurred any custom’s import fees or small balances due to bank wire transfer fees, the balance will be charged back to you in your next invoice. We recommend using a major shipping company like FedEx, UPS, or DHL with their own custom’s broker, so any custom’s fees can be paid up front. Unexpected bank wire fees can be avoided by paying invoices with a credit card or check.

 

 

UC DAVIS ON-CAMPUS RATES INCREASE JULY 1, 2012
Phase 2 of the SIF price increase for UC Davis clients will go into effect July 1, 2012.  The new rate will be applied to all samples received after July 1. Contact Emily if you need a copy of the UCD pricing list.
