ASITA 2014 Announcement

The UC Davis Stable Isotope Facility is pleased to host Advances in Stable Isotope Techniques and Applications (ASITA) from June 15 to 18, 2014. This year ASITA, previously the Canadian CF-IRMS Workshop, celebrates its 20th anniversary. The focus of the workshop continues to be methodology advancements, technical challenges, and novel applications. This workshop has a reputation of being a lighthearted forum for discussing and solving technical challenges. We look forward to another great meeting.

The conference will begin Sunday with a day of short courses focusing on basic isotope analysis, instrument operation and troubleshooting, and data manipulation.  The remainder of the conference will feature oral and poster presentations, as well as break-out discussions on an assortment of topics including user sessions for specific instrumentation.  Instrument users and vendors are encouraged to participate and present their work related to new techniques or application of stable isotopes in earth sciences.  Please contact us to suggest discussion topics.

Lab tours will be arranged for Wednesday and will likely include several labs within a short distance of UC Davis.

ASITA will be the week following Goldschmidt (June 8-13th) and Davis is just 20 minutes west of Sacramento, CA.  For those attending Goldschmidt, consider minimizing travel costs and enjoying a weekend in northern California.  Davis is conveniently located central to numerous attractions including San Francisco, Napa and Lake Tahoe.

ASITA registration and travel information is available here.

July 6, 2011

Due to budget reductions, the UC Davis Mail Division will provide mail service to the SIF on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays only. This reduction affects interoffice and US Mail (standard post). This reduction does not affect private carrier delivery, including FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

The SIF highly recommends that shipments requiring special handling, including gas and refrigerated samples, should be shipped using a major carrier such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL. Refrigerated samples should be Express shipped to arrive between Tuesday-Thursday to avoid any delay with refrigeration. Customers are responsible for all customs fees.

Streamlining the Bacteria Denitrification Assay

At the beginning of 2011, the SIF began testing and implementing a more efficient way to prepare and analyze nitrate in water samples for δ15N and δ18O. The SIF abstract High-throughput analysis of δ15N and δ18O of nitrates by the bacterial denitrifier method was presented at the ASITA (Advances in Stable Isotope Techniques and Applications) Workshop in June 2011.

UC Davis Stable Isotope Facility Symposium

The SIF hosted a symposium, From Sources to Scapes:  Contributions of Light Stable Isotopes to Environmental Sciences, on December 16-17, 2010, at UC Davis. The event, which honored the retirement of the facility's founder, Dr. David Harris, featured a keynote address by Keith Hobson (Environment Canada) discussing the use of spatial isotopic patterns, or isoscapes, to track migrant animals. In addition, a number of SIF customers presented their research. A poster session allowed time for informal discussion with attendees as well as SIF staff.

For more information, please see the Symposium page.
